Here is our family #recipe for sweet potato chili along with variations. I’ve noticed that people have varying tastes for chili and the best process is to mix the ingredients to your family’s preference. We are trying to reduce the amount of meat in our meals so I put more sweet potatoes and less meat. I like the sweet potatoes because it eliminates the need for corn bread sides, the sweet potatoes add just enough sweetness to make it work.
That being said, I don’t list amounts on certain ingredients and do on others. But even on those, it is up to your family’s taste preference. For example, some people don’t like the jalapeno spice and use green chilis or no pepper/chili addition, counting solely on the cumin, chili powder, and cayenne to add spice.

Main Ingredients:
– You can use any kind of meat, tofu, chicken, turkey or double up on the sweet potatoes (did you know sweet potatoes are a great source of protein?)
– Sweet potatoes chopped and fried
– 1 chopped onion
– Multiple cans of diced tomatoes ( we use 3 – 4 cans of diced tomatoes and green chilis)
– Multiple cans of Beans (we use multiple types of beans and I usually add in 3 – 4 cans)
Spices:
chili powder
cumin
salt
cayenne
garlic powder
onion powder
pepper
Garnishes:
parsley (italian or regular)
cilantro
green onions
shredded cheese
sour cream
