2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, diced
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups water (or vegetable stock if available)
1 scant tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 pinch each (or to taste) ground cumin and cayenne pepper
1 (14.5) ounce can diced tomatoes and their juices
3 medium-size sweet potatoes, diced but not peeled
2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, drained and rinsed
