HOW TO MAKE PICADILLO: Easy Recipe with Ground Beef and Hatch Green Chile

If you’ve ever wanted to learn How to Make Picadillo, then this easy recipe is for you. It starts with ground beef and potatoes, and ends with Hatch green chile. For me, it’s the ultimate comfort food. Read on for the recipe, but keep in mind amounts don’t have to be exact.

Picadillo

1 lb. ground beef
2-3 potatoes, cubed or sliced
2 roma tomatoes
approx. 6 Hatch green chiles, roasted, peeled & chopped
half an onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
approx. 2 cups water
1 tsp. chicken bouillon
1 tsp. ground cumin
salt and pepper to taste

Heat a large skillet with enough cooking oil to coat the bottom of the pan, and fry the ground beef in it. When meat is almost cooked, add in the chopped onion and potatoes. Stir and continue cooking a few minutes. Then add in minced garlic, chopped tomatoes, and chopped green chile. Continue to cook a few minutes longer. Add in chicken bouillon, cumin and enough water to just barely cover ingredients in the pan. Mix well and let it come to a boil. Lower the heat, cover, and let simmer until the potatoes are fork tender, approx. 15 minutes. Finally, season with salt and pepper to taste and enjoy!

  1. Yum. I haven't had this in a while. I need to make some and a batch of fresh tortillas. Be bold and be blessed.

  3. I turned into my Dad about the time my son turned 6 or so and he asked "Why do I have to do that" and my answer was "Because I said so." LOL

  4. I cooked this yesterday with a slight variation, I seeded and diced jalapenos instead (I use hatch/Anaheim's a lot so we decided to go with jalapenos) came out pretty darn good (wife said so). Thank You. P.S I also did your creamy refried bean recipe, they were a homerun, I forgot scratch beans require work unlike opening a can.

  5. Thank you for reminding me of this recipe. Sometimes in our 56 years of marriage I cook something a lot then it goes to the back burner and I forget about it as I move on to newer recipes. I’ll be trying your chile verde for sure.

  6. I love picadillo. Will make your version soon 👍 When my brother and I were arguing in the back seat of the car, my mom would say "if I have to pull this car over" We never knew what the end of that sentence was because we behaved after that! 😁

  7. I love this recipe 😊thank you Marcy and guess what ,you inspired me to make this and I did and it came out amazing my rice didn’t turn out like yours well, the color it’s not is bright :/ but it still came out really good. Thank you so much I love your videos. Can’t wait to watch the newest ❤

  8. The day I told my roommate it only takes 5 seconds to wipe off the countertop 😂😂😂😂. I instantly said I'm sorry I got it.. my dad just came out my mouth 😂😂😂

  9. I have been looking for this recipe!! My mother in law from NM always made this. She passed yrs ago. Brings back great memories from my NM days. Love your recipes!

  10. My wife and i made this and it turned out excellent. Thanks for the recipe. 👍👍💯💯♥️♥️

  11. I'll be 60 years old in three weeks. My parents, especially my Dad taught me and my two brothers far more about how to be a man and a Father than almost anyone else I've known. He is and will always be my hero.
But I've become my Grandad more than my Dad. My beliefs, values, attitude, and personality are closer to his. I think of him very often and still miss him immensely.
My parents and grandparents could all cook. I do most all the cooking in our house now that I'm retired. My recipes are highly influenced by all of them, especially my Mom.
BTW, I capitalize all those titles because I respect them so much. And being a Father and Grandfather now too, I take those titles very seriously and try hard to pass on all I've been taught and cherish so deeply.
Also, you mentioned the Gieco commercials. I love the ones with the gecko. But I detest the parodies of becoming your parents. Sure, they're comical. But to me, they're just one more potential influence in our current culture intent on destroying the family. I'm 100% against that.
Your recipe looks delicious and I'm going to make it, hopefully tonight. But as much as I want to, I can't include the refried beans, the rice, and the tortillas. If I ate that way often, I'd weigh 300 lbs instead of 200.
Maybe I will include the refried beans…
