I could careless what Texas has to say about beans in chili, Iām going to put beans in my chili. Texas also claims they have the best bbq and we all know the Deep South has the best bbq.
The term "Chili" is shortened from the Mexican Spanish term "Chili con Carne," which actually translates as "Chili with meat." If chili is something separate from the meat, then it has to have beans, or else there's nothing there to be your chili. It can't mean nothing with meat, it has be something, like beans, with meat. The beans aren't not chili, it's your meat that's not chili!
In my opinion it all depends on what the chili is used for. If the chili is used for just eating beans are fine. If it's on a chili dog or a chili fries or chili whatever no beans
We have a competition down here Southern California it's a chili cook-off they better not find a bean in the chili are you lose other than that I couldn't give a rat's ass man Chili's good having some crackers
Much respect to the Texas way, But my MN chili gets chili beans, always, no matter how Iām eating it or what I am eating it on. AND, there will always be cornbread & honey served with it.
Hate to break it to you folks, but if you are hungry nobody cares if the chilli has beans or not. If you need to stretch the pot, you add beans, corn, corn meal, onions, and whatever else you can afford. This is one of those āhow many angels can dance on the head of a pin?ā arguments.
I'm a natural born Texan and I don't care either way. I was raised that food was meant to be ate and not wasted. So if it's on your plate or in your bowl, you eat it and be grateful you got to eat for the day.
As a person who grew up pretty poor and who's lived in Texas my whole 33 years… It doesn't matter to me unless it's Frito Pie. There are no beans in the chili that go in Frito Pie š

I'm all Texan, and as far back as I can remember eating with my great granddad who was a camp cook put beans in our chili.
