Italian Peppers and Eggs Sandwich – Depression Era Recipe

My father was Italian and this was a breakfast that he enjoyed. It was very economical because his family grew peppers in their garden, raised their own chickens for eggs, and baked their own bread. I like to season it with an Italian seasoning herb blend that makes it taste like it has sausage in it but it doesn’t. It’s a delicious sandwich that we enjoy.

#cooking, #recipe, #greatdepression;

My father was Italian and this is a breakfast that he used to like to eat it was very inexpensive since they grew peppers in their garden and had their own chickens to provide eggs this is what I’m using to make peppers and eggs I sliced 1 red pepper and I sliced 1

Green pepper I used a half of an onion that I chopped I have four eggs and one pad of butter for the frying pan I have my frying pan on medium low heat and now I’m putting my pad of butter if my frying pan looks a little yellow it’s

Because I cook with a lot of turmeric and it stains the pan and it also stains a lot of things so you have to if it spills anywhere you have to wipe it up right away now I’m adding my onions my butter melted and now I’m adding the peppers

I’m gonna cook these now till they’re soft nice and soul I’ve been cooking the peppers and onions for 15 minutes and they’re done now I thought I had to lower the heat to low because they were just cooking too fast now I’m adding four beaten eggs and this will make two sandwiches I’m going to put the cover on now and

Cook this till the eggs are firm it’s just about done now so if you want to put salt and if you want to season with salt and pepper it’s fine I like to use the Italian seasoning I’m so good okay now it’s done and I’m going to put together the sandwiches and grandpa

Loves this mmm this actually could make four sandwiches but grandpa’s hungry so I’m giving him an extra-large sandwich fresh basil is also nice on this sandwich how does it taste grandpa thanks very good MA glad you like it very delicious with the Italian seasoning it gives it a flavor like it

Has sausage in there yeah so I knew something tasted like sausage

  1. My mother always made those and called it a "WESTERN!" I think she was a Texan at heart, as she would make hambers with green peppers, onion and lettuce and call it a "TEXAS BURGER."

  2. I'm eating this right now. I'm always delighted when I find a meal that truly doesn't need meat. I can see why this would be so good back then because the Italian seasoning really does give you the feeling of sausage in it. Just delicious! Thank you!

  3. My dad is half Italian and he makes this all the time.
He usually prefers the green peppers, and he doesnt use onion, and he scrambles it rather than making an omelet.
And the weird thing is I was just about to watch this video and he asks me if he can have some of the peppers/capsicums I bought so that he can make some chilli and egg (that's what he calls it). So I had to watch this with him 😀

  4. I'm self teaching myself to cook and finding so many easy to make recipes is so appreciated. Thank you for such wonderful recipes and history.

  5. If you add a chopped tomato, it becomes a Mexican recipe.
Might want to use a roma tomato, less juices.
Delicious indeed, also with some warm tortillas. 💖😎
You could also use spicy jalapeño or serrano peppers, if desired.

  6. I just discovered your channel (hence my comments from today on various videos) and I'm really enjoying this. Getting lots of yummy ideas. Thanks so much for sharing your delicious wisdom 😉

  7. We're not Italian but due to my grandpa being in the military my dad grew up in Europe, mostly Spain and Italy, he never even entered the USA until he was 17. After my dad was 18, he joined too and eventually my family ended up in Sicily. I had no idea this dish was Italian, but my mom made it for us so often! Usually for dinner as it's fast and she worked full time so didn't have a lot of time for weeknight dinners. Often we had this with a side of zucchini in tomato sauce, white bean soup, or salad. It was one of my favorite meals as I was not a big meat eater (vegetarian now 20 years) 😂 my mom usually made some Italian sausage for my dad to go with it, though.

  8. apparently there was1 grumpy italian guy sitting there saying "that isn't how you make a pepper and egg sandwich" because it isn't how his momma made it so he thumbed down the video. some cultures dishes are regional but in italy they are familial

  9. My mother made this all the time and called it a "western "
I have since learned it is really called an "eastern" !!!!

  10. Very good simple recipe is best. My grandmother didn't put onion in to accentuate the pepper flavor a bit more. Also, IIRC, only green peppers were used sometimes as well.

  11. Add cheese and ya got a omelette! I use the same stuff only wrap mine in flour tortilla shells and fry them off for lunches for work. They freeze well to. 😋

  12. Born n bred NJ of Italian descent. Growing up, this was pretty common fare. We also did potatoes and eggs, just skip the peppers and used sliced new potatoes that you sauté.

  13. Eggs and peppers are two of my favorite foods! I've loved this sandwich since I found out about it, and I've found it's fantastic with a little bit of pickled red onion and sour cream! ^_^

  14. I'm not used to seeing this on plain white toast but that'll be my go to bread next time. I'm not always
in the mood for gnawing through French bread.

  15. I'm making this for dinner tonight. Meat is just too expensive now. Eggs are getting expensive too.

  16. Just found this video and it made me smile. My father was born in Sicily and I have fond memories of him making this kind of sandwich often when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. I think he and Mom still make it now and then.

  17. YUUUUMMMM i have almost everything to make it but bread so I'm gonna do ours on tortillas

  18. Ah! Memories. My Mom would make this with the long light green peppers instead of the mixed red and green and put on rolls wrapped in foil, put in an insulated bag and taken to Jones beach with a jug of iced tea from a powdered mix – Nestea, I believe. Thanks for reminding me. I make it sometimes too but doesn’t taste like hers.

  19. We eat a lot of ‘yard eggs’ and I have put chopped veggies in. I will soon make this sandwich. I enjoy your videos. Ahna

  20. That looks fantastic, thank you. The basil and Italian seating sound like a good addition. — This is almost a country omelette or like a frittata. Some nice Italian bread and mmm. — I've just realized I don't know enough about Italian cheeses beyond the usual suspects, Parmesan, Romano, Mozzarella, Provolone, but there must be many more good cheeses from Italy, Sicily, and Syracuse.

  21. I had never heard of this dish but when I lived in Florida there was a sub shop nearby and one day, while I was waiting for a sub, I noticed a guy cooking peppers and eggs on the grill. Then I saw it listed on the wall menu as "Special Order". Every since that day, I make these at home and they're a real treat.

  22. Thank you for sharing. I now know what I will be ENJOYING for dinner tonight! That is one beautiful sandwich made by a beautiful person for another beautiful person to enjoy and it can now be shared around the world with so many beautiful folks!!!!

God Bless all and please take good care….
