What kind of soup is this? I had it in rural Baja California Sur 2 years ago and it might have been the best thing I ever tasted.

If this has hominy in it and shredded chicken, beef, or pork, then it’s pozole.

Red pozole, delicious.
Hot-Remote9937
That’s pozole. Flavored by rehydrating dried chilies and blending til smooth then straining out the seeds/skin
Ignis_Vespa
So judging by the pic alone, I see no hominy but I see potatoes, onions and Cilantro.
It could be a simple caldo, either chicken or beef, with a tomato stock. Caldo Tlalpeño could be an option too

That is pozole, my friend. And it is the greatest thing either of us has ever tasted.

OP, if none of these soups ring a bell with you, posole is called gallina pinta (painted hen) in the state of Sonora and typically has beans added to it. Did they give you red cabbage to mix in? If they did, it’s posole or gallina pinta. If they gave you lime wedges, cilantro, and diced onion but no cabbage, it was menudo. And you would recognize the tripe in menudo, which has a honeycomb texture on one side and can be chewy while also melting in your mouth.

I think that’s pozole and Damn that shit is delicious

Either Menudo or Pozole rojo.
UnacceptablLemongrab
Looks like red pozole to me especially if it has hominy IMO. Could be menudo but I don’t see anything that looks like fatty meat or tripe.

I’d guess birria.

Some people here think lettuce doesn’t belong in pozole
Friends hear me out, I think that’s Gallina Pinta. I’m from Baja California originally and this looks just like gallina pinta- def not caldo tlalpeño or menudo
friendly_extrovert
Looks like pozole. My mom still makes it every Christmas Eve and it’s the best soup ever.
Chaotic__Cynn
Looks like pozole, but it could also be espinazo de puerco or res.

Seems like pozole.
Pozole – beef, hominy
Gallina pinta – beef, beans, hominy
Birria or caldo de res – beef
Can anyone recommend a good pozole recipe?
