Mutton Pepper Fry is straight out of the foodie heartland of Kerala, it is your perfect weekend menu booster, whether you have a house party at your place or just a relax-on-your-couch sort of a weekend. A short trip to the nearest spice store, an appetite for the hot & spicy is all you need to make the most out of this lip smacking recipe!
Mutton Pepper Fry Ingredients
To Grind:
Batch 1-
1 Cinnamon piece
2 Cardamom pods
Few cloves
Batch 2-
Few black peppercorns
500g mutton 🍖
1 tbsp coriander powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
20 garlic pods, chopped finely 🧄
6-7 slit green chillies
Some curry leaves 🍃
2 1/2 large onions, chopped 🧅
Salt as per taste 🧂
Water as required
Coconut oil for cooking 🥥 🛢️
Method:
– In a small tadka pan dry roast the cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. Crush them with a pestle & mortar and your dry spice mix is ready.
– In a pan, add boneless mutton, coriander powder, chilli powder, turmeric powder & salt. Combine this mixture well.
– Add some water and the dry spice mix to the mutton, cover and let the mutton cook for 20 to 30 minutes.
– In another pan, add coconut oil, chopped garlic, green chillies, curry leaves, chopped onions and a little salt.
– While the onions cook, add the remaining dry spice mix and crushed black peppercorns.
– When the onions are translucent and start to brown, add the cooked mutton into the pan.
– Fold in the mutton with the onions & keep stirring till everything gets mixed properly.
– With the pan on high flame, keep stirring the mutton mixture for a few seconds and your Mutton Pepper Fry is ready to be served!

This is a very nice recipe. However, I would not boil the mutton separately. I would add the raw mutton to the fried onions and masala. And where is the pepper? I’m going to try this today, but will cook the raw mutton in the masala. Lately, I have seen recipes using pre-boiled meat.
