4 Family Dinners For $20: Tex Mex Tamale Chili

Dinner #2 in our Dollar Tree dinner series! 4 dinners for $20 total—this one is just $5 and reheats beautifully. I’m calling it “Tex Mex Tamale Chili”, but you may recognize it as “Mexican Mix Ups” from Grandma’s Recipe Rolodex.

Ingredients:

1 can chicken tamales (remove wrappers, slice thin)
1 can corn (drained)
1 can diced tomatoes & green chilies (used 2/3 can, saved the rest)
1 can beans (rinsed and drained—black, kidney, or pinto)

Optional Side- cooked rice, tortilla chips, or cornbread
Optional Topping- cheese or sour cream

Instructions:

• Remove paper from tamales and slice into thin rounds.

• Add sliced tamales and sauce from the can to a pot.

• Stir in drained corn, about 2/3 can of diced tomatoes and chilies, and rinsed beans.

• Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes.

• Serve over rice, corn chips, or cornbread. Add toppings if available.

What’s your must-have chili topping?

  1. I am so excited that my small town is finally getting a Dollar Tree here in Canada. Can't wait to try out all these recipes

  2. Those Tamales are my treat when I go to dollar tree, I love them. I pack them for lunch, but I will try this recipe next time!

  3. I love those tamales. I grew up eating them. Mom would make tamale pie. Slice those tamales and layer them with Fritos, canned chili and cheese. Of course, I’m sure she used the generic version of everything to save money, but we could make a couple of meals for four people out of it too.

  4. Those tamales are absolutely disgusting my friend had them at his house and open up the can and just to smell made me gag he made me taste a piece of it and I about vomited. In fact it tasted like vomit.

  5. Those hormel tamales are awesome! You can cover a few with chili grated cheese onion and black olives and it's delicious ! Also dollar tree hotdogs sliced in baked beans is another inexpensive meal!

  6. I wish they sold the Nalley brand of tamales, they’re much better imo,but they’re getting harder to find-all my local grocery stores stopped carrying them 😕

  7. where the fuck are you that DT stll does a dollar? every DT i have walked into onver the last 2 years are 1.25, and are starting to move up to 1.50, and im in louisiana so i figured as backwards and slow as this state is it had to be EVERYWHERE before it got to us. Damn, with that price cost i need to move to your state, cause if I bought 1 item a day at your cost vs 1 item a day at my cost, the price difference is 91+ dollars a year, let alone buying more than a single item a day, not counting the stuff thats already 1.50.

  8. I know we’ve all been eating this stuff for years but the preservative in canned foods is basically plastic and gets stuck somewhere in your body
