Monte Cristo Sandwich. Recipe ↓

■ INGREDIENTS:
• white sandwich bread – 6 slices
• sliced cheese (Swiss or American) – 8 slices
• cooked ham – 4 slices
• mayonnaise – to taste
• mustard – to taste
• egg – 1 large
• milk – 2 tbsp
• black pepper – to taste
• ground nutmeg – a pinch
• butter – for frying
• garlic powder (optional)

■ HOW TO COOK:
1. Spread mayonnaise on one slice of bread. Layer with cheese, ham, and another slice of cheese.

2. Spread mustard on a second slice of bread and place it on top. Repeat the layers: mustard, cheese, ham, cheese.

3. Top with the third slice of bread, spreading mayonnaise on the inside.

4. In a shallow bowl, whisk the egg with milk, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg (I added garlic powder (optional).

5. Carefully dip the entire sandwich into the egg mixture, coating all sides well.

6. Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt some butter.

7. First, lightly toast the edges of the sandwich. Then cook both sides until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.

8. Serve hot and enjoy immediately.

  3. What you mistakenly call a Monte Cristo sandwich, if the tops are made with breadcrumbs, would be one of the types of Argentinian ham and cheese sandwiches. More common. Although the lid is too thick, and this is the version we call "tostadas" in Argentina.
