The Chili Dog You Didn’t Know You Needed (Detroit Coney Style)

It’s Home Alone Week on Chewed Up, and the hosts reveal what they actually cook when nobody else is around — no dinner parties, no expectations, just pure comfort food cravings.

Carla Hall shocks Clinton Kelly and Michael Symon by going all-in on her ultimate solo indulgence: spiralized hot dogs topped with a rich, bean-less chili inspired by Detroit-style Coney dogs. What starts as a simple hot dog turns into a masterclass in texture, nostalgia, and flavor engineering.

Along the way, the trio dives into the idea of “fun food” — the meals that bring joy whether you’re cooking for yourself, your family, or your inner child. From pimped-out cereal creations and homemade sundaes to Nutella sandwiches and decadent cheese nights, the conversation swings between culinary technique and hilarious personal stories.

Listeners also learn surprising food history (Detroit — not Coney Island — as the home of the Coney dog), cooking recovery tricks when recipes go sideways, and why spiralizing a hot dog creates maximum crispy edges and topping distribution.

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed this video segment. It’s 5:30 in the morning, and I’m in my bed laughing hysterically. The three of you are better than going to a comedy club. Keep the good work up with your humor, laughs, and food; Lord knows, we need it! 😂❤

  2. Looks good, but I make a killer A&W chili sauce that my cousin would make for school fairs! She would start with five LP of hamburger meat! My take is only 1LP!

  3. The hotdog that I love is the Fork In The Road quarter pound hotdog because it’s nitrate free. (Can’t have nitrate for medical reasons). I love it with coleslaw & Dijon

  4. I will be making this real soon. I am positive this will be my husbands favourite recipe from the show to date.

  5. This was the funniest episode yet!! All of them have funny moments but that Covid situation was HILARIOUS!! Probably more so because I could see me doing something like that……I'm trying to do better lol. Had to show this one to my husband, he was cracking up too.

  6. I also like to have sauerkraut with the addition of lots of caraway and mustard seeds & mustard on my hotdogs

  7. Clinton, I’ve got you beat. I’ll be 65 in 2 weeks and have NEVER had a chili dog. Not a fan of hot dogs or chili.

  8. Me and 2 of my best friends will have hot dog nights every few months and people find it so weird, but we love it.

  9. great video thank you! totally agree
i’ve started reading older books and love them! so much more.
    I also saw another comment.
That modern books aren’t as funny and i agree i like comedy sprinkled into books.

  10. Clinton, I made my first cassoulet this winter. Michael I cure and dry my own meats also, my guanciale is killer! I love a kitchen challenge.

  11. Carla is making my stomach hurt, I'm laughing so hard! Dude, I really missed you three together for so many years.

  12. You guys, this was one of the best/funniest episodes yet!! SO good!!! Thank you for the rainy day laughter that I so desperately needed! ❤

  13. I made these chili dogs tonight for dinner!!! AMAZING!! Who knew a spiral hot dog 🌭 could bring so much delicious happiness!!! Thank you Carla Hall!!! Thank you Clinton, Michael and Carla for the laughs!!!

  14. My kids grew up on Spiral Dogs on the grill…it was a family favorite! All the edges get all brown and crispy . And the crevices hold all the toppings✨️
    😍

  15. I love hot dogs, too, Carla!!! We have never called them “chili dogs” here in south Louisiana, though. We just call them hot dogs with chili. I do love a hot dog with chili po-boy.
When I was little, my mother would slice a hot dog lengthwise, stuff it with a chunk of American cheese and wrap it on bacon and bake them in the oven——one of the best heart attack on a plate meals I ate as a kid.
BEST line on ANY episode——-“Oh, I didn’t think of that…”

  16. yup….born and raised in Michigan. Now I'm craving a snappy hot dog with medium spicy chili, onions, mustard and a side of chili cheese fries. Course I'm also mostly German decent so I also love a hot dog with kraut and thousand island. Then there's just my zany side that likes ketchup, mustard, dill or sweet relish with pickled jalapenos…..no idea what's behind that one LOL. Love you guys. You guys give me an appetite even when I'm anxious and not hungry. You guys truly help me with my mental health and make me laugh while helping me eat and inspire me to cook new things as well as go back to old foods that used to always make me happy. Thank you and God bless!

  17. GREETINGS @CHEWEDUP #CREW #TEAMHAPPY FRI-YAY. CATCHING THIS PAST SHOW SINCE I MISSED IT.
MAYBE IT'S A GENERATIONAL THING GROWING UP IN THE 90'S BORN IN '84 – WHEN IT COMES TO #HAMBURGERS🍔AND #HOTDOGS I CAN DEVOUR THEM IF I SMELL IT AND I'M AROUND IT. WHEN IT COMES TO ME MAKING IT I'M MORE INCLINED TO MAKE A HOTDOG BEFORE A BURGER PROBABLY FOR PREPARATION REASONS. IDK WHY🤷🏽‍♀THE LAST BURGER I MADE WAS A YEAR AGO AND DUE TO NOT HAVING THE USUAL #HAMBURGERBUNS & #TOPPINGS #TOMATOES🍅#LETTUCE🥬#CHEESE🧀 #PICKLES🥒BECAUSE I'M EXTRA😅I JUST #FREESTYLED. I MAY HAVE HAD #POTATOES IN #FRENCHFRY FORM BUT I MANAGED SOMEHOW. I DON'T EAT #PORK ANYMORE THEREFORE I ONLY EAT HOTDOGS WITHOUT IT & CHILI. IT'S NOT EASY TO FIND IN-STORE SINCE #PERNIL🐖IS MIXED-UP IN EVERYTHING. THE BEST BET IS BUYING #GROUNDBEEF #GROUNDTURKEY AND COMBINING SEASONINGS TO CREATE A "CHILI-MIX" AND JUST MAKE IT #HOMEMADE.

CONTINUING ABOUT #HAMBURGERS. WHEN I THINK OF PACKAGED MEAT MY MIND GOES TO BROWNING AS CRUMBLES TO MAKE A #MEAL. I'M A BOXED-MEAL KID LIKE #HAMBURGERHELPER. I WANT FOOD TO STRETCH FOR MANY SERVINGS AND BURGERS TAKE UP A LOT OF PRODUCT. IT'S ABOUT #CHILDHOOD #DEVELOPMENT #LIFESTYLE. I DEVELOPED THIS MINDSET PROBABLY FROM USING WHAT WAS AVAILABLE & NOT WANTING TO USE TOO MUCH IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE (PARENTS) WANTED SOME. MY LATE DAD CONSUMED #BURGERS AND #STEAKS ALL THE TIME WHEN HE CAME HOME FROM WORK IN THE EVENING❗I DIDN'T COOK MUCH SINCE MY MOTHER DID IT. #DEFROSTING WHAT WAS #FROZEN AND WAITING WAS THE NORM AND IT JUST DIDN'T APPEAL TO ME GROWING UP. SHE WAS #TERRITORIAL #BOSS OVER THE KITCHEN SO IT ALSO KEPT ME OUT FROM TRYING ANYTHING. NOW @41 I HAVE FIGURED OUT WAYS TO GET AROUND THE "WAITING" TO GET STRAIGHT TO IT. THE PROCESS OF #COOKING #BAKING ON MY OWN HAS BEEN WHAT I NEEDED FOR SO MANY YEARS. IT IS MY #PURPOSE.
