Coco Coir

Wonderful stuff, but it’s a pain in the butt to reconstitute from bricks. You think an 11 lb brick ain’t much, but wait til you see how much water this stuff holds and how much it expands once fully hydrated. If you’re going to use it, you need a drum or tub and a good shovel to break the bricks apart. You’re also going to have to wait a few minutes for it to fully expand and become hydrated before it’s workable into bags, soil mixes, or a custom soilless seedling mix. It doesn’t have nutrients, so if you’re putting plants into this you’re going to need to amend with a focus on calcium because coir naturally binds calcium. A bit of extra bone meal will provide a long term slow release of calcium. Caveat: some sources will need to be thoroughly rinsed to remove excess salt content and buffered with Cal-Mag if you’re using it right now right now (or a good dusting of bone meal if you’re prepping future bags).
