  1. My mom usec canned Pork and Beans as her base and doctored them up. She'd add diced sweet onion, chunks of bacon, yellow mustard, ketchup, brown sugar and maple syrup, and then put slices of thick (American) bacon on top of the pot of beans and bake them until the sauce thickened/condensed & the bacon on top was crispy. The beans were almost candied, thick, smoky, tangy. Very memorable.

  2. Agree with putting in some mustard to balance the sweetness and bake about an hour in the cast iron skillet to thicken beans and create more of a gooey goodness!

  3. Regarding knowing some wonderful foods are not good for you – about 3 decades ago I saw a bumper sticker that said, and I quote, "Eat healthy, Exercise regularly, Die anyway."

  4. I have never seen ground meat (aka mince) added to BBQ beans. Burnt ends, ham hocks, bacon, etc. for flavor yes, but never just ground beef/etc. For a super quick not as good but ready in a few minutes, try a can of your basic bbq beans and just add some Stubbs or similar BBQ sauce to them while you heat them (assuming you have a tomato or tomato/mustard based sauce)

  5. The hardest part about making BBQ baked beans is keeping them balanced on the grill.

  6. Try dipping a pork rib or hotdog ect. in it. I call it pork and beans the opa {grandpa} way!!

  7. Yes!!! I was going to say you need to fix some cornbread!! You already knew!!! Lol!! See why Americans (especially us southerners!) are so overweight!?!??? Lol!!

  11. Is Bacon in Australia ham? Do they have American style smoked bacon (pork belly) in Europe and Australia? Consider baking it. That's how our family does it with a touch of molasses.

  12. Cornbread goes extremely well with red beans and rice also. I crumble mine up and incorporate it within. Next time prep the onions, bell pepper, bacon and ground meat all together so it incorporates before entering the beans and your extras. Your can also add jalapenos and a can of creamed corn to the cornbread to make it more of a cross between cake and pudding.

  13. My biggest guilty pleasure is watching people from other countries try the foods that I grew up on, and still make me smile ear to ear today. Makes me proud of my culture. God bless you, sir, and the US of A.
