So it’s late summer and hitting early Autumn (Fall) here in Australia… Topping out at 30-33 degrees C (86-92 F) and while we pre-watered our Habenero trays, Ebony Fires, Devils, Ghost and Butch T plants, we were very worried about 4 days away… So a bit of an update for those interested…
**Habeneros**
Pre-holiday they were the most robust to heat after Ebony Fires (several season-established), so we were least worried about them.
It looks like we may save 3-4 out of 10+ young plants. We will have to see after watering does it’s work (only got home an hour ago), if we save more than 3 plants I’ll be super happy (see pic).
**Ebony Fires**
OG plant and it’s babies did amazing and we aren’t surprised given a larger pot that holds moisture better, although the Grandpappy plant is one of the hardiest plants (of any type, not just chillis/peppers) we’ve ever had. The thing just can’t die.
It’s second gen (background of Haba tray shot) is a little worse for wear, but given Grandpappy’s strength, should be fine.
**Devils**
3 plants each in 2 pots, they survived ok, although one sideways-growing one is struggling and has been for weeks. We think the other two in the pot have better root systems. TBH we should have repotted them sooner but they were giving fruit so we were hoping to ride it out till spring. Still, not bad given they were seedlings at the same time as the Habas. Lots of fruit sprouting, so we consider it a win.
**Ghost**
An absolute beast, was a bit droopy but still was pumping out fruit like it was nobodies business. We had harvested all the ripe fruit prior to leaving, 4 days later a whole new batch is ready, what an absolute monster effort, we’re so proud of her. Perked up really quickly with a bit of a soak (bowl of water).
**Butch T**
Taking her sweet time, so much of her fruit hasn’t even turned in colour yet, despite fruiting around the same time as the Ghost. Still, she was only a little droopy and perked up in minutes after a water. I can’t wait to make an oil from this bad boy. Seems to be getting hardier to the heat so another win.
**Overall**
My missus’ succulents and others almost all survived and on the pepper front it was only the Habas and 1 Devil that have been a struggle. We’re a bit disappointed in our Butch T taking her sweet time but on closer inspection a lot more fruit has began to grow.
Since writing this and taking said photos, the entire front tray of Habas is recovering, so another win! Back tray looks like it may be a loss but we’ll see.
The holiday was amazing, my ASD son ***loved*** the beach and the surf and the waves were great so I even got some surfing time in to boot.
Great holiday, most plants saved, our two superhots are doing well, overall a successful 4 day holiday!
I hope this has been enjoyable to read/see, I love these sorts of posts so thought I’d share one.
Very happy for any criticism, feedback/etc. We’re a little tight on money so haven’t really invested in proper infrastructure for holidays or to improve our growing, we’re complete amateurs with basic green-thumb knowledge so happy for any feedback/discussion and will engage!
Anyone been through something similar or would like to share a story?
