Hot dogs are about as American as apple pie. It’s not uncommon for different states to offer their unique spins on classic American cuisine, and the hot dog industry is no exception. While some stands and shops take inspiration from other popular local cuisines for their toppings (like adding coleslaw or fish sticks to their classic franks and buns), others insist on layering, excluding, or adding ingredients to ensure their dogs remain a distinct staple to their regional style.

tomato sauce to the simmering wiener bath vendors serve the franks on doughy buns which soak up the flavor toppings include ketchup mustard sauerkraut and tomato onion dressing found only in new york city coney dogs hail from new york’s coney island you uh probably didn’t use to tell you that but immigrants coming through ellis island who encountered coney island hot dogs put their own unique spin on the recipe as they settled throughout the country take for example william bill and constantine gust kerose who migrated to america from greece and enjoyed nathan handworkers famous franks on coney island before making their way to detroit the duo opened american coney island in detroit in 1919 paying homage to the food that inspired their restaurant and technically claiming right to the first coney dog to give their product a distinctive flavor the brothers topped the dogs with greek meat sauce a beanless chili that became a standard garnish bill and gust started their business together but a feud split the restaurant in two stories differ on how and when the feud began but the disagreement ended up creating a fiery frankfurter competition side-by-side restaurants exist in detroit to this day the hot texas wiener doesn’t hail from the lone star state but rather from paterson new jersey e before i being the preferred wiener spelling in these parts it’s been around since 1924 when someone known only as an old greek gentleman opened a hot dog counter in downtown patterson apparently to test versions of his spaghetti sauce as a hot dog topping he eventually found the ideal combination of ingredients cementing the recipe’s local stature but no one recalls who the gent was or why he chose to name his specialty after another state maybe in the patterson of 1924 texas sounded spicy and exotic almost like a whole other country the dish consists of an all-beef frank blanched briefly in hot oil before finishing in another vat cooks then lay the weiner on a bun and top it in strict order with spicy mustard chopped onions ground beef chili sauce tomatoes more onions and the secret spice blend in a city of divisions north side south side cubs vs socks craft beer that delivers a signature snap when bitten so yeah just to clarify they are supposed to look like that instead of nestling into a typical side split bun red snappers are served in top loaded buns like new england lobster rolls the flat bottom design allows red snapper to stand up more easily and the buns are great for buttering and toasting traditionally snappers are best served with potato salad french fries or new england’s humpty dumpty chips cincinnati’s signature hot dog stands out due to its topping of distinctive skyline chili immigrant nicholas labrinidis brought the recipe to the u.s a sweet tang the labridades family keeps mum but many speculate the ingredient is cinnamon allspice or nutmeg come on labrina does family we know we’re close some cincinnati dog lovers used to think the recipe included cocoa powder but skyline shot down that theory by declaring that people allergic to chocolate needn’t worry about having a reaction not everyone in cincinnati embraces their city’s 11:15 I love Texas Tommy Hot Dog Style ❤❤
The Maine Red Snappers are the best dog out there IMO. And the Maine way to have them is with B&M BBQ beans.
Cincinnati has a forgotten hot dog that used to be served at Reds games. The Big Red Smokie, was a skinless smoked sausage made by local meat processor Khans. They were beautiful, a perfect snap with a hickory smoke flavor which is great with this spicy mustard they have there.
The best hot dogs are simple not smothered with too many toppings. I traveled a lot and had hot dogs in many states. Rhode Island Weiner's is the best with their Greek style chili, steamed bun, onions, mustard and juicy dogs.
How about a Plattsburgh NY Michigan dog? Special boat type roll with special meat sauce. Onions are optional….
My perfect hotdog build:
Hot dog.
Bun.
Chopped red onions. (layered under and over the dog)
Chopped Olives. (layered under and over)
Non-Sweet Relish.
Ketchup.
Mustard.
Sla Ya Mama seasoning.
A bunch of those werent even hot dogs. Lol
Sweet independence. 🤍
In upstate ny, just below the Canadian boarder, we have a local specialty called "michigans". I don't really know why they are called that. It's basically a meat sauce served over hotdogs, particularly with onions and mustard. There is no singular recipe or way that the sauce is made, so everyone has their own recipes ranging from spicy to sweet.
The recipe I use is
-3 tsp chili powder
-3 tsp cayenne powder
-1&1/2 tsp cumin
-1 tsp black pepper
-1/4 cup of Frank's red hot sauce
-2 tsp mixed onions
-1 15oz can of tomato juice
-2lbs of ground beef.
Brown the meat, then mix in the ingredients.
Slawter dawg are best
Y'all NEVER mentioned "white hot dogs" . How come ?
No mention of the Michigan dog? My wife is inconsolable 😭
What about an updog?
The Sonoran is probably my favorite followed by Coney and Chicago.
Lmao.. you bring up Jimmy Carter a few times. Second worse president, behind Biden.
I'm a lifelong Clevelander. It wasn't until I saw the Man VS Food episode that I learned about polish boys. I had never heard of them. I believe Seti's has closed. I'm not a fan of fries on sandwiches. I liked Seti's chili dogs & sausage.
'Hotdogs are as American as apple pie'.
The hotdog sausage came from Germany and the apple pie was invented in England in the 1400s.
…but anyway…
Chicago has the best hotdogs ngl
How dare you leave out the classic Rochester NY Garbage plates from Nick Tahoes… …
Cozy Dog Drive-In you mention is in Springfield, Illinois and not Springfield, MO as your video says.
Wait what, deglaze oinions with COCA COLA ? Why ? Did this work ? D:::
Grew up around Paterson eating Texas Weiner's, yes the sauce is very good but the reason many of us like them so much is how they're cooked in oil. It's basically a fried hot dog, you can see in the video it gets that unique crinkly texture and has an extra snap when you bite into it, they're fantastic.
You forgot the Michigan, and Glaziers frankfurters from northern New York State.
Pigs in a blanket count ?
Fun fact, getting shot through the brain in the military told me that if you really disagree you should split and try to HONORABLY ruin the other person by making their food look like shit 😂
and some of these are hilarious, hotdog just COVERED in shredded cheese and you see the end of the hotdog making the chili almost hidden. They wanted to make a point but didn't have the linguistics to shoot straight; like me a veteran who was shot through the language center lol
At 2:58 a picture of a restaurant called hot grill pops up my grandparents took my sister and I there all the time as a kid. They have great food and it’s such a comforting vibe in there. I really recommend it if you’re ever in the Clifton area in NJ
The Cozy Dog is is Springfield, Illinois, not Springfield, Missouri.
I’m 46, when I was 24 won a bonus at my job and wanted to open up a Hot Dawgs (I live in Ga) my wife at the time was so against it.
To this day in Augusta Ga there is still no hotdog only establishment 😢😢😢.
I feel like it could have been a thing but maybe my next life
WRONG do you're damn home work Cincinnati chili was not started by any Skyline Chili…Dumb Ass…
Tf is this foo trippin on calling an LA dog a "danger dog" like wtf bruh? Like were all dirty n shit? This fool said they leave it in the sun all day? This some ignorant white boy. Talking about food poisoning? Stupid comment. I was cool with the video till that point. Have some respect.
