Do you love chili dogs? If you’re like most people, then yes! This hot dog chili recipe with ground beef is surprisingly easy to make! It has the perfect balance of savory, heat, and a little sweet.
Hot dog chili is different from traditional chili in that most traditional ones are soupy in texture and contain beans. This hot dog chili has no beans and is mostly ground beef in a little bit of thickened sauce and has a touch of sweet to it. It helps balance the savory of the chili and the hot dog itself.
Use this recipe to make chili cheese fries and as a topping on your burgers, too!

hey everybody welcome back to another edition of learning to smoke my name is Dan Phelps and today we’ll be doing some hot dog chili as well as some chili dogs go along with it because can’t make hot dog chili not have chili dogs right I’ll walk you through the easy tutorial but also I want to show you a little twist you can do with the Buns stay tuned and don’t forget to like And subscribe if you like what you see thank you I wonder if the people in the hot dog eating contest they had chili cheese dogs how many less hot dogs would they eat or how many more how many do you think random thoughts when you eating chili dogs [Music] W this is a recipe for hot dog chili I’m also going to be making chili dogs with it afterwards so I’m going to dice up my onion first because I like to prep all my ingredients before I go out there and start cooking with it so I’m going to take my white onion and I’m going to cut it in half and then I’m going to cut it in half again so basically I’m cutting into quarters and from there I’m going to dice it up and this is the method I like to do to dice up my onion feel free to do whatever method you want dicing up white onion to put on the chili dog after you made your hot dog chili I help really adds to the flavor of the whole experience so dice it up and there you go but let me give you one tip here when you’re cutting onions chew gum if you chew gum it helps keep your eyes from watering or you could just be like this guy yeah that guy gets emotional when it comes to food here’s all the ingredients that you’re going to use here for your hot dog chili and I’m going to start out with ground beef I got a cast iron skillet heated up on the grill and I’m going to throw in my 8020 blend of ground beef I’m going to use this Masher here to help quickly efficiently Mash that up I’ll put a link in my caption for this tool here it’s very helpful anyway I’m going to add in some salt I’m also going to throw in some pepper some garlic powder and then some chili powder and once I’ve got that on there I’m just going to let it cook and mix it all up until it’s brown and now cook it till it’s brown and then you can use a colander to drain it or you can even use a paper tow towel or a bunch of paper towels uh to help drain it let’s say you’re out remote and you don’t have a colander around to drain it but make sure that if you’re going to use paper towels that you mix it around you mix the beef around in there uh because you want to make sure you Pat the grease dry out of the pan and even on some of the meat and once that’s done I got the tomato sauce and also got some ketchup here I like to use ketchup it adds a balance of sweet which is a good bounce to all the Savory that happens not just with the chili in general but even with the hot dog and the toppings and even the bun I also find it to be good Balan to the chili powder and the cumin that we add in here to the chili so as we mix that around we’re going to let that simmer for about 10 15 minutes feel free to add more sauce and more ketchup than I did but I like mine a little thicker and while that is simmering there we’re going to fire up the griddle I’m going to use my Blackstone grab my glizzies as the cool kids call them rotate the hot dogs every few minutes or so get it to the D State you like make sure that the temps on The Griddle are just fine I like to use this thermal Works infrared gun to get the most accurate temperatures on the griddle surface there there Link in my caption to find out how you can get this thing for yourself I swear by it I love it anyway so these hot dogs are cooked to the DST I like now it’s time to pull them off oh failed I try to get all of them on there but five out of six ain’t bad but don’t worry they all made the boat so now we’re going to take our buns I’m taking some regular hot dog buns right now and what I’m doing is I’m going to butter up the inside here and I’m not going to go too heavy on the butter because because what I’m going to do with these is I’m going to put them Face Down On The Griddle and cook them about 30 seconds to a minute and as I prep these I should also let you know the trick I was talking about earlier I like to use King’s Wine rolls for my bun and so what I’m going to do is take this 12pack or I should say 11 pack thanks to one of my twins who grabbed it before I could get to it and I’m going to just break these off I’m going to take two rows of three and I’m just going to make uh two hot dog buns with it I’ll put the remaining rolls away but not before I have a little snack first now that the snack breaks over going to go back to slicing in these Hawaiian rolls and I’m going to cut them about 34 the way down I don’t want to cut all the way through completely I want to make sure I can still spread them apart just like that and then I’m going to do what I did with the hot dog buns and I’m going to take the butter and I’m going to just smear it on each side not put too much on but just enough I’m going to slap them Face Down On The Griddle just like that like I say cook it for about 30 to 60 seconds the way the temperature of mine is I’m cooking it for probably about 40 45 seconds cuz you’ll see right here I get the perfect amount of toasted inside on both of these I’m going to get the same kind of toastiness there on the hot dog buns too but now that I’ve got those done it’s time to assemble these hot dogs I mean this is a very quick easy recipe to make and so I’m going to take my hot dog chili I like to lay it in first I know some people like to put the hot dog on first but I do what I do and you do what you do so I’m going to take the chili and then I’m going put on the hot dog and I’ll sprinkle on some freshly grated cheddar cheese and then those onions I cut earlier yep there they go right there and there you go it’s just that easy to make these things but also you can use this hot dog chili for chili cheese fries and even burgers this recipe is on my website too now that we made our hot dog chili and got our chili cheese dogs now it’s time to take a bite looking down the barrel of a gun there or bar a hot dog I love this I talked earlier about how you want a little bit of sweet in your chili because you got a Savory hot dog and Chili’s normally Savory itself you got the Savory bun Savory butter all that stuff so have a little bounce of sweet in there uh it’s perfect and I also love the toppings of cheese and onions on top uh let me know in the comments what kind of toppings you like do you like cheese do you like chili do you like anything else on there go with your chili cheese dogs let me know thanks for watching this Edition of how to make chili cheese dogs here here on learning to smoke my name is Dan Phelps thanks for tuning in and until next time hope your days are filled with good times good friends and good barbecue probably can’t eat this on camera
