Is Homemade Paprika Actually Cheaper? Let’s Do the Math.

Let’s break down the actual math behind making homemade paprika from bell peppers and compare it to store-bought paprika.

I used discounted red bell peppers and turned them into paprika, then calculated the cost per ounce, not just the bottle price.

Homemade paprika:
8 bell peppers at $0.50 each = $4.00 total
Yielded 3 oz of paprika
Cost: $1.33 per ounce

Store-bought paprika (where I typically shop):
$3.39 for 2.12 oz
Cost: $1.60 per ounce

Homemade isn’t always cheaper, but in this case, it was.

Can we also acknowledge the color difference between homemade and store bought paprika!? WILD! Which says a lot about freshness and ingredients.

This video is about low-waste cooking, price transparency, and understanding how to compare food costs the right way.

  1. For clarity: I compared cost per ounce, not bottle price.
I used 8 discounted bell peppers at $0.50 each ($4 total) and got 3 oz of paprika ($1.33/oz).
    Store-bought here is $3.39 for 2.12 oz ($1.60/oz).

Homemade isn’t always cheaper… but in this case, it was.

  2. Homemade typically means less preservatives and added chemicals, too; and, when you factor in the health benefits, homemade is cheaper.
