When flowers are successfully pollinated, the pedicel (stem) will thicken and the petals will be jettisoned from the calyx. The new pepper will begin growing from the center of the calyx (the ‘cupped’ portion) where the flower was. Many times the stigma will still be present (thin white elongation at the center of the flower); the stigma is the female portion of the reproductive anatomy of a pepper and connects to the ovary.
