I made this video with my childhood neighbor, Shermaine. Shermaine doesn't use a traditional rolling pin to make her flour tortillas. She uses the handle of an old shovel.
Her father made it for her mother as a wedding gift. Her mother used it to make tortillas for decades. Then she passed it to Shermaine. Now Shermaine makes tortillas with her daughter Brittany, and hopes to pass it to her someday too.
It's a technique handed down through many generations of women, and a shovel handle that's made more tortillas than you can count.
