Urad Dal Chutney is a simple and flavorful South Indian chutney made with roasted urad dal, coconut, and spices. It has a nutty taste from the dal and a mild spiciness, making it a perfect accompaniment for dosa, idli, and rice. This chutney is creamy, aromatic, and easy to prepare.
Ingredients:
3 tbsp urad dal
½ cup grated coconut
5 dried red chilies
2 gandhari chilies (for spice)
1 small piece tamarind
Salt to taste
1–2 tsp oil
For tempering:
Pinch of mustard seeds
Few curry leaves
1 dried red chili
pinch of asafoetida
1 tsp oil
Method:
Roast dal:
Heat oil in a pan. Add urad dal and roast until golden and aromatic.
Add chilies:
Add dried red chilies and sauté for a minute.
Cool & grind:
Let it cool. Grind with coconut, tamarind, salt, and a little water into a coarse chutney.
Prepare tempering:
Heat oil, add mustard seeds. When they splutter, add asafoetida, curry leaves and red chili.
Finish:
Pour the tempering over the chutney and mix well.
Serving Suggestion:
Serve with dosa, idli, vada, or even hot rice with a drizzle of coconut oil 😊
