Hi pepper peeps,
Got two habanero plants that I potted up a good few weeks ago and they are thriving, as I’m starting to harden them off.
However, when I did pot them up a couple weeks back, I ran out of compost. I didn’t think this was an issue at the time but, my pots are only 27x25cm/8.7L, and I realise that’s maybe a bit small as it is, so having it not filled totally with soil is maybe not ideal.
Should I top it up, or keep the base of the root exposed?
Is it likely to make any difference now the roots are established?

I would personally feel confident topping this up with a nice mix of compost and fertilizer, but only well timed in your growing season and fertilizer planning. It isn’t required, though, especially if you are giving nutrients by other means (liquid).
The base of a pepper becomes woody like a tree and that’s what’s starting to happen.
