Melissa King
Oct 9
Last year, Top Chef fan favorite and lesbian heartthrob Melissa King released her James Beard Award-winning debut cookbook Cook Like a King. You may recall that she and the show’s host Padma Lakshmi sent the collective sapphic universe into a gay panic with their flirty Instagram banter while simultaneously promoting their books, plus there was a sultry Gomez and Morticia couple costume that ignited dating rumors. (They’re just friends, or so they claim…) Now, King is back with her memoir The Girl Who Became King. The book shares her story of growing up queer in a Shanghainese and Cantonese family in Los Angeles’s Gabriel Valley, her initiation into the high-stakes world of Michelin-starred restaurants, and her Top Chef journey. She’ll share her story with food writer, photographer, designer, and Little Fat Boy blogger Frankie Gaw at this event, hosted by Charlie’s Queer Books at Ballard Homestead. Seattle Restaurant Week
Oct 18–31
Sure, it’s confusing that Seattle Restaurant Week is actually two weeks, but that just means we have twice as much time to pig out on specials from dozens of delicious participating restaurants. And there are some true superstars on the list. Lupe’s Situ Tacos in Ballard will be offering a few different specials, including three of their incredibly crispy tacos, or five taquitos, served alongside a cup of soup, aguas frescas, and baklava for $30. That’s enough food for two! (Though I do hate to share my taquitos.) There’s also Shiro’s Sushi, Marination in Columbia City (and, hell yeah, their special includes malasadas), Kilig, which Stranger contributor Meg van Huygen put on her 2024 Best Restaurants in the Seattle Area list, and Melting Pot in Bellevue. I did not know Melting Pot still existed! The ’90s really are back. (Various locations) MEGAN SELING

Seattle Coffee Festival
Oct 24–25
More than two dozen roasters are participating in the Seattle Coffee Festival, and I’m already strategizing how to drink everything without causing my nervous system to collapse on itself. The lineup features Victrola Coffee, Boon Boona, Kuma Coffee, Anchorhead Coffee, Sip House, and Speed Potion, whose iridescent and shimmery packaging makes my heart skip a beat even without the jolt of caffeine. Thankfully, there will be some food to help sop up all the coffee, including 9th and Hennepin Donuts, and treats from the Anh Ơi Bake Shop (read more about them on page TK!). If they have their fried banana cookies, I’m going to buy up every single one for myself. Sorry. (Magnuson Park Hangar 30, times vary) MEGAN SELING
