Learn how to make tamales from scratch by making masa, tamale filling and even steaming the tamales.
What are tamales? Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish usually made with a corn dough mixture that is filled with ingredients like meats, vegetables, cheeses or beans. The tamales are traditionally wrapped in cornhusks or banana leaves and cooked by steam. The wrapping is removed before eating and can be served with hot sauce or pic de gallo.
For this tamale recipe we used chicken for our filling but you can also use meat or pork if you’d like. We hope you’re hungry because this chicken tamale recipe makes a total of 8 servings. If you have too many tamales don’t worry. You can freeze the tamales by placing them in a freezer bag. When you’re ready to eat them, just place a wet paper towel over them and put in the microwave to give them the steam cooking effect.
