Mexican living in UK. Homesick and really really miss frijoles charros, so I made some for dinner. You have to get creative with the ingredients over here, but I am happy they at last sale pinto beans & masa for corn tortillas, not pictured, but they came out bomb af.

There’s a couple ingredients making their way into the supermarket over the last few years but yeah… There’s literally none. I imagine you’d find Mexican grocers in London but elsewhere it’s hard to find anything.
If I recall correctly there was a website I used to order online, mexgrocer it was pricey but it had an nice assortment of Mexican products
I lived in England for four years for a military assignment. I missed Mexican food so bad, came home a few times and all I wanted was mom’s cooking and street tacos and burritos. For most of the assignment the grocery store on base didn’t even sell legit corn tortillas, then out of nowhere they started getting Guerrero tortillas so I finally had something decent.
At least tienes la coronita too!

What kind of meat did you use in the charro beans?
I would have thought ingredients for frijoles charros would be easy to find almost anywhere but thinking about it hotdogs and jalapeÅos in vinegar and bacon would be hard to find.
Those beans look great! I’m not Mexican, but I lived for 40+ years in SoCal on the Mex border. Then, boom… we moved to Montana. Over the last 15 years, I’ve gotten pretty dang good at whipping up some authentic tasting Mexican food. My favorite… chile rellenos. Glad you got your bean fix!

Frijoles charros would be pretty easy to make anywhere isn’t? at least here is onion, tomato, bacon, cilantro (coriander leaves) and serrano.

I guess the hardest part is the serrano pepper but i guess you could use bell peppers and hot sauce to kind of make do.
Copenhagen and Hija de Sanchez is only a short flight away if the homesickness gets too bad š
Best packaged tortillas are El Milagro tortillas out of Chicago.

I’m a Mexican married to a Brit and when we lived there I really missed everything.
I used to order from MexGrocer and Otomi Bristol.
Panchos burritos in Manchester was amazing and authentic, I think they opened other locations.
The community of women would make tamales, rosca and pan de muerto which was great.

Provecho! I was also in the UK for a military assignment from 04-09. I miss living out there and as @SNeddie mentioned there are some Mexican groceries you can get at the base comisary (military grocer or market). It was limited but they tried and you could also special order certain things. I know we used to get the real pork or beef chorizo there. We also had a group of Spanish speakers who would get together and cook some fine Latin cuisine for our get togethers. My favorite dish to make was pozole and we would always get requests to prepare it at other events. I miss the camaraderie in my old military days, especially overseas. Thanks for taking me back to memory lane.
BTW is cool Chile still out there? Iāve seen on instagram that Mexican restaurants are popping up in certain spots in London. Iām heading back this summer on vacation and Iām really looking forward to it.
I feel your pain! I lived in the UK for 2 years and my 3rd day there I was already craving Mexican food. I made guacamole, went to the grocery store for cilantro to find out they were called coriander! Felt so dumb! Iām originally from San Diego, so you know we have bomb Mexican food.
