My friend and I decided to drive out to Waltham, MA to try Taqueria El Amigo since it recently made [Yelp’s Top 100 places to eat in 2023](https://www.yelp.com/article/yelps-top-100-us-restaurants-2023). I had taco especiales, and I opted for tacos de cabeza. The tortillas were pretty flavorful, and the texture was nice and soft. The meat was very tender (which was ideal since I just had a braces adjustment), and it was accompanied with chopped onion and cilantro. They also came with avocado slices, but I’m not a fan (please don’t come at me), so I gave them to my friend. My friend had the fajitas mixtas with chicken and shrimp, I believe, and she liked them okay. However, my friend thinks all Mexican food should taste like Tex-Mex, so her review was a bit limited. The salsa was I believe escabeche-style, which I’ve had before. It was a nice stray from the usual taqueria salsa I’m familiar with getting where I’m from in TX. My friend also got horchata, and when I tried it, it tasted like watered down melted vanilla ice cream. It was sweet, but I expected it to be a bit more complex, or at least have a cinnamon flavor. I also sampled my friend’s rice and beans: both were well seasoned (and by that I mean they had salt), but they weren’t the star.
Overall, I’d give it like a 7 out of 10. The tacos, I’d rate higher, but with everything overall, I’d say they were pretty good. Probably the best tacos de cabeza I’ve had since moving to the northeast, but I haven’t been to too many taquerias since moving here.
Anyway, if you’re in the area, I’d definitely give them a try. The prices are reasonable— my 4 tacos were $10, and with the complementary chips and salsa, it was more than enough food for me.

it’s a shame the tortillas weren’t made in house. moving on, if you thought cabeza was good etc. try Lengua 👍🏼.

I used to live a few minutes away from El Amigo. We used to get it a couple of times a month.
For a local joint, the food is outstanding (especially for the Boston area). But, I wouldn’t drive more than 20 minutes to get there.

Tortillas look ok. Meat looks good too, seems they taste quite greasy (see a lot of liquid, must be oil), but that’s actually pretty good.
Cilantro and onion looks fresh, that’s very important.
Salsa looks good too, just be sure to put it in the tacos, the more the better.
