Is gatos a real thing?

A few days ago I had a topping for my tacos de papa called “gatos” made of chopped manzano pepper, white onion, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. Is it really called gatos?

Could just be a regional thing, my wife’s from Jalisco and in her town and surrounding towns they call salsa chirimole and hoy sauce chiripete but others from Jalisco have never heard of that.

I’ve had it, but with pineapple for tacos de chorizo in Toluca, but not with that name.

    Probably a very localized thing.

Sometimes you have some very specific names for things I’m talking neighborhood or town level specific.

Like for example a famous taqueria popularizes an obscure salsa and they call it after the taqueria.

It’s a regional thing regarding the fact that Chile manzano is spicy like habanero, but also unlike habanero, Chile manzano Can give you some serious heartburn. So feels like gatos scratching you from the inside. Source: in-law family from Toluca area.

I believe it could be a thing from hyper regionality, from where my ma is from they call ‘migas’ ‘sopas de Gato’ instead, which is funny because the name comes from a Spanish dish that has nothing to do with ‘Migas’

    Great combination of ingredients, though.

Yes it is! It is common in Estado de México. My family prepares it with Chile manzano, onions and lime. Salt and pepper for seasoning and that’s it.

My family from my dad’s side is from Tenancingo, and from my mom’s side, they’re from Ixtapan de la Sal (both in the State of Mexico). Both sides knew that topping as ‘gatos’. Probably it’s commonly used near Toluca.

I remember whenever we visited my dad’s family, we would come back home with kilos of ‘obispo,’ and when you mix it with ‘gatos,’ it’s the tastiest thing you can eat in a taco. Now I live abroad, and every once in a while, I miss that delicious treat :’)
