Small Axe Peppers – Habanero Ginger – OBITUARY REVIEW

Here lies Small Axe Peppers Habanero Ginger –

6.8/10

I first met this sauce at Hot Sauce Werkz in St Louis, Missouri. According to their website, Small Axe Peppers use community gardens as their sourcing for their products. They use premium price points to help fun the maintenance of these gardens, and also put in efforts toward creating a system of mutual benefit, in that the quality is assured, and the urban areas that these ingredients are sourced from are taken care of. They partner with non-profits, church groups, refugee and immigrant advocacies, high school students, and workforce development agencies. Please take a moment to consider purchasing from this company, because the world needs more initiatives like this. And as a side note, I enjoy their simple labeling. Now, let’s get into the review!

REVIEW: The first thing to note here is the pepper flavor being a bit more earthy than other habanero, which typically leans floral and vegetal/fruity. The mustard and ginger really lift this aspect up, giving it a really heat-forward first bite. The burn level of this one is around the medium mark for a habanero sauce. This one has a strong vinegar taste, but isn’t too overwhelming, especially because the ACV has that more balanced nuances of sweetness, and even its own earthiness that also plays with the ginger nicely. Overall, this sauce is versatile and just straight up good. Its neither complicated nor simple, and if I were to give it any comments on how to improve, it would be that it could use a bit more salt. Rest in Peace, Spicy Prince.
