EAST LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – Community organizations gathered at the local farmer’s market Sunday for Senior Appreciation Day, offering information about services available to older adults in the area.
Live music played throughout the market as vendors and local groups shared resources with seniors and their families. The event, now in its fourth year, is held annually around the middle of August.
While East Lansing is known for its student population, organizers said the event highlights seniors who remain in the community year-round.
One message businesses shared with families: don’t wait until a crisis forces a decision.
“So many families and seniors wait until they’re in crisis mode. I get a ton of phone calls. Oh my gosh, we have to make a big decision in 48 hours. Plan ahead. Even if you hope you don’t need it, know what’s available in case you do need it,” said Melissa Jacklett-Smith of Oasis Senior Advisors Mid-Michigan.
