New grocery store opens in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom with a focus on local products

The Caledonia Food Co-op is fully stocked with produce that is locally grown, offering opportunities for Vermont farmers and access to healthy, local food for consumers.

Molly OrmsbeeSAINT JOHNSBURY, Vt. —

There’s a new one stop shop in St. Johnsbury where people can find fresh, local products — from vegetables to artisan cheeses.

On Wednesday, the Caledonia Food Co-op officially opened a new member-owned store. The project started two years ago when the co-op (which launched in 2018) purchased a building on Railroad Street in downtown St. Johnsbury.

The store is stocked with foods that are grown and produced locally. The goal is to create new opportunities for local farms and strengthen local agriculture while improving access to fresh, healthy foods in the remote Northeast Kingdom.

There was a large community turnout at Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting, demonstrating the enthusiasm behind the new store.

Anyone can shop at the store. You do not have to be a co-op member to make purchases. Hours of operation have not been posted publicly yet, but you can find information about the grocery store and membership options on the co-op website.
