Aldi breaks ground on new Charleston-area grocery store

Aldi is expanding its footprint in the Charleston area as the discount grocer breaks ground on a new store in Moncks Corner.

The German-owned discount grocer is building at 613 N. U.S. Highway 52, near the intersection of Highway 17A and Anglers Drive, across from Chick-fil-A and Walmart.

Known for its no-frills shopping model, discount brands and its quarter cart-rental system, the Moncks Corner location will be Aldi’s second store in Berkeley County. The chain currently operates a store in Goose Creek off Saint James Avenue.

Plans filed with the town call for a 20,664-square-foot store on about 4.5 acres, with an additional 1,870 square feet reserved for a future expansion.

The new shop comes as Moncks Corner continues to see growth and new development along the Highway 52 corridor.

Aldi has not yet announced an opening date for the latest location, but Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. shared a project update on social media Aug. 13, stating, “The Aldi store will start going vertical today.”

It’s not the only Aldi location in the works.

The supermarket operator is expected to be the anchor tenant at a future retail development along West Ashley Circle, a representative for the property owner told Charleston’s Design Review Board in April.

In the fast lane

Not only did Summerville get a new Chipotle Mexican Grill, but it also got the extra value of a drive-thru.

The national fast-food chain opened its latest location at 1275 Nexton Parkway with its signature Chipotlane — a drive-thru lane that allows customers to conveniently pick up digital orders without leaving their cars.

Also unique to Summerville, guests can try the limited-time item Chipotle Honey Chicken off the brand’s new curated high-protein menu. Those who enroll in the Chipotle rewards program can also earn free monthly food drops, birthday rewards, and a free side of chips and guacamole with a purchase.
