St Andrews restaurant set for extension

The owners of The Seafood Restaurant on the Bruce Embankment had applied for permission to erect a single storey extension.

The proposals had attracted five objections including one from the local community council.

Concerns were raised about the ownership of Common Good Land and development on the site however members of Fife Council’s North East Planning Committee were told this issue was dealt with through a separate process.

Other concerns highlighted were parking and the design of the extension and its impact on the surrounding area.

A report to councillors explained that the extension would have a footprint of around 58 square metres and would be set marginally below the existing roof level of the restaurant.

“The extension would be finished in matching blonde ashlar stone to the existing lower floor, complemented by a wrap-around glazed clerestory serving the kitchen,” it stated.

“Roof detailing and finishes would match the existing building. In addition, a wall of kitchen herbs is proposed along the south-facing elevation of the extension.

“The purpose of the proposal is to relocate the kitchen from its current position within the existing upper floor glazed structure.

“This would allow the restaurant space to fully utilise the floor-to-ceiling wraparound glazing, thereby enhancing the quality of the internal environment and maximising the available sea views, which are presently significantly constrained by the existing kitchen layout.”

Planning Service Manager and Committee Lead, Alastair Hamilton, told councillors that, overall, the scale and impact of the proposals were considered to be appropriate.

The committee unanimously agreed to approve the application.
