The Domestic Violence Coalition in Van Buren County is struggling amid federal funding cuts, but is still doing what it can to continue supporting victims.
Coalition Director Melanie Hooker addressed the South Haven City Council this week, saying the Domestic Violence Coalition works with police and the courts to be there for victims each step of the way, from sexual assault examinations to the issuance of personal protection orders to making it through court appearances. However, the job is getting harder.
Hooker said cases are up this year by 27.8% while the organization has faced a 21% federal funding cut and another 18% cut is looming. That’s as demand for help is increasing.
“Last year there was 164 misdemeanor cases of domestic violence,” Hooker said. “This year it’s over 200 already. We’re seeing huge increases in domestic violence. The economy is bad, we see an increase in violence.”
Hooker said the coalition no longer has funding for hotel stays, security cameras, and other emergency help while Van Buren County has no domestic violence shelter. She added some victims are living in cars, campgrounds, or churches, but what they’ll do as the weather cools off isn’t known.
Hooker said the coalition had six employees last year and is now down to three, but it’s determined to continue working.
“We’re scared, but we’re here and we’re dedicated. According to me and my board, we are going to keep doing these services until we run out of money. I will be here at least for another 15 years, God willing.”
There was some good news. Hooker said as federal support has dwindled, Van Buren County has offered to increase its contribution from $25,000 to $35,000 this year. She also noted the United Way is a key supporter.
