Top hot dog spots across the Triad and how you can recreate them at home
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —
As Americans prepare to enjoy more than 100 million hot dogs this Fourth of July weekend, P.B.’s Takeout in the Triad is sharing what makes their hot dogs stand out and offering tips for grilling at home.
“They’re easy and quick and I guess fun; everybody loves a hotdog,” said Grant Cann, a hot dog enthusiast who has worked at the restaurant for 14 years.
P.B.’s Takeout has been serving hot dogs since 1987, and co-owner Brandon Pate said their success lies in sticking to their original methods.
“We’ve been making it the same since day one. We haven’t changed anything; everything is homemade. We toast the buns, that’s what everyone likes—the buttery toasted buns,” he said.
For customer Dennis Librandi, the Fourth of July is the perfect time to enjoy a hot dog.
“I was just looking up hot dog joints because of the Fourth of July and P.B.’s came up and I said that’s where I’m going,” Librandi said.
He said it’s the perfect spot for a quick lunch.
“Fast service, not very crowded and I get to sit inside today because it’s quite hot out as everybody knows,” he said.
The most popular order at P.B.’s Takeout is Carolina style on toasted buns.
“When people come and get a hot dog and just want ketchup on it, I don’t feel like they are getting the full Carolina style dog. I recommend getting slaw, chili, mustard and onions and making it messy,” Cann said.
P.B.’s Takeout will close during the holiday weekend, but Cann and Pate shared tips for grilling hot dogs at home to attempt to achieve the nostalgic flavor they serve up.
“Leave it on the flame a little longer, let it get a little crispy,” Cann said.
Pate added, “I don’t know if they can get too close, but maybe cook it on a flat top grill, and grill the buns to get it kinda close to how we do.”
