SNOW HILL, N.C. (WITN) – A new resource in Eastern Carolina is helping out the community by providing food and hygiene essentials to kids and families before the new school year.
Journey Towards Improved Health is expanding its resources, giving away full bags of food to anyone with an empty belly.
“If you’re hungry now, you can come get a couple loaves of bread, and you can get some muffins, some cakes, and some donuts,” co-founder Bobby Supel says.
Founders Bobby and Eva Supel told WITN it’s a way to give back to the Greene County community and surrounding areas.
“We don’t just want to be a provider of services. We also want to be more of a resource to the community, so having these items can help reduce the food insecurities that sometimes our families are plagued with,” Eva says.
According to Feeding America, one in five children in the state face hunger.
And as many funded summer food service programs are ending before the school year, Eva says it’s important to step in and provide a place where kids can get free food.
“I was a former teacher myself, a middle school teacher, and I recall students coming in and not being able to focus. It’s hard to focus when you’re hungry, so I used to keep snacks in my classroom,” Eva told WITN.
Now, the snacks are in the break room, and she says they plan to expand the items they offer beyond food to include hygiene essentials as well, with new resources stocked every Wednesday.
“To have this, to have something local, with Lenoir County, with Wayne County, with Greene County, it’s very important, and the community needs it,” Elizabeth Long, an office assistant with the center, told WITN.
Journey Towards Improved Health says they plan to continue supplying these resources into the school year and have no plans to stop.
The center will also attend the back-to-school bash at Greene County High School this Saturday, bringing food to give to the community.
