A popular plant-based food is being pulled from stores and online distribution after the manufacturer discovered a potential problem involving its packaging.
Hodo Inc. announced Monday, Aug. 31, that it is voluntarily recalling select lots of its 8-ounce Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu because printing ink from the packaging may have migrated into the food.
The Hodo recall notice says the affected product was distributed to wholesalers, retailers, and consumers in 29 states, including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.
Distribution ran from Friday, Jan. 16, through Thursday, July 16.
The recalled tofu comes in printed film packaging and carries UPC 850565007842. Affected products have use-by or best-if-used-by dates ranging from Friday, May 15, through Saturday, Nov. 7.

Hodo said it initiated the recall after noticing discoloration during the scaling up of production for a new product. Additional testing of the Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu in similar printed packaging produced results that were apparently similar.
The Oakland, California-based company is investigating whether chili oil and heat may have contributed to the possible migration of material from the printed film into the tofu.
No illnesses or injuries have been reported.
Consumers should not eat recalled products.
They can return the tofu to the original place of purchase for a full refund or request a replacement-product voucher through Hodo’s recall website.
Hodo said questions can also be directed to [email protected] or 888-751-4515 from noon to 7 p.m. Eastern Time Monday through Friday.
The company said the voluntary recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the US Food and Drug Administration.
