KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Starting Monday, Sept. 7, eleven Black-owned restaurants across Wyandotte County will be highlighted during the first-ever Black Restaurant Week in Kansas City, Kansas, giving residents a chance to support local businesses.

Among the featured restaurants is 1930, a soul food restaurant where the owner says every meal is prepared with care.
“‘1930, soul food made with love.’ So that’s what we do. We show a lot of love from our customer service to the customers that come in here from day one to our new customers,” Chef Free Davis, owner of 1930 Classic Kitchen.
That welcoming atmosphere is something customers say sets the restaurant apart.
“You’ll never see anything more pleasant than the people who come here and enjoy everything they do, and they walk out with a smile on their face,” one customer said.
From burgers to chicken and waffles, the menu reflects the restaurant’s commitment to traditional soul food flavors.
Restaurant owners and supporters hope the inaugural event will draw attention to the area’s thriving food scene.
“I hope it goes on for a long time,” Davis said. “It’s going to showcase some really talented restaurants in Wyandotte County because there are some really good cooks here, and they work very hard to do what they do.”
Another participating restaurant is Wilson’s Pizza and Grill in the historic Quindaro neighborhood. Owner Wilson says his business is about much more than serving food.
“I always call my business a community business. It’s not just me,” Wilson said.
Wilson says his deep roots in Wyandotte County have helped shape both his business and his mission.
“I’m Wyandotte County, 913 area code, and I just love being here. I love being here on Quindaro, and I love even more than just being in business on Quindaro, just being a real anchor on Quindaro and a support to the community,” Wilson said.
One of the restaurant’s defining features is its open kitchen, allowing customers to see exactly how their meals are prepared.
“I like when people come in and see their food being prepared,” Wilson said. “We have an open kitchen so everybody can see everything.”

Black Restaurant Week aims to increase awareness and support for Black-owned businesses throughout the county while encouraging residents to explore new dining options.
