BARRE, VT – Food & Wine has named Butterfly Bakery of Vermont’s Maple Wood Smoked Onion Hot Sauce one of five hot sauces worthy of a perfect 10, marking the Barre food maker’s third appearance in the national publication.

The September 1 Food & Wine article, “This Reviewer Has Tried Over 500 Hot Sauces — These 5 Scored a Perfect 10,” highlighted Maple Wood Smoked Onion among a select group of sauces that earned a 10 out of 10 for flavor. The ratings came from @hotsaucereviews, who has tasted and reviewed more than 500 hot sauces.

For Butterfly Bakery founder Claire Georges, the recognition is particularly meaningful because there isn’t anything particularly complicated about the sauce.

“The whole point of this sauce is getting as much flavor as possible out of really good ingredients,” said founder Claire Georges. “We start with peppers and onions grown for us by small farms here in Vermont, smoke the onions over maple wood and don’t mess with them too much. To have this sauce called out as a perfect 10 in Food & Wine is pretty incredible.”

The recognition is the latest in a string of national attention for the small Vermont food manufacturer. Butterfly Bakery has now been featured three times by Food & Wine, more than any other craft hot sauce maker, and its sauces have appeared on four seasons of the popular YouTube series Hot Ones. Maple Wood Smoked Onion appeared on Season 7 and has since become Butterfly Bakery’s best-selling hot sauce.

Butterfly Bakery buys its produce directly from a network of small farms throughout Vermont, with all produce grown within 200 miles of its Barre kitchen.

“We’re making hot sauce in a small town in Vermont with vegetables grown on small farms around us,” said Georges. “Seeing those bottles make their way onto Hot Ones and into Food & Wine over and over again is pretty wild. I love that something so rooted here can reach people all over the world.”

Butterfly Bakery of Vermont was founded by Georges in 2003 and produces hot sauces, mustards and other specialty foods at its Barre, Vermont cannery.
