A year after closing in Helotes, Cuarto de Kilo Burgers has returned to San Antonio’s far West Side.
The opening marks the beloved Mexican burger chain’s return to the U.S. — as their new location at 12370 Potranco Road is the only one outside of Mexico. Their restaurant in Helotes closed in November 2025.
In a video on Instagram, co-owner Álvaro Aguilar said the company’s first stint in San Antonio taught them that “bringing Quarto de Kilo to a new market was a challenge.”
“Some things worked, and some things taught us that we needed to be better,” he said. “So we listen, we learn, and we got to work.”
Aguilar and Miguel Pérez founded Cuarto de Kilo in Guadalajara in 2010, using recipes from Aguilar’s mother. The joint is known for its massive burgers grilled over mesquite charcoal. The chain fuses an American staple with Mexican flavors like homemade guacamole and grilled chili peppers.
Aguilar and Pérez had opened more than 30 locations around Mexico when they planned the expansion into the U.S. Their Helotes outpost on Bandera Road opened in June 2023.
When the Helotes location closed, Aguilar said the restaurant was moving to a “bigger and better” location. Part of that move included building a “stronger team” and “clearer” vision for the chain’s U.S. expansion.
