‘Hunger Never Sleeps’: Second Harvest volunteers pack over 100K meals during 24-hour marathon

Kennedy MasonORLANDO, Fla. —

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida wrapped up its second annual 24-hour “Hunger Never Sleeps” marathon on Saturday, packing over 100,000 meals for those in need.

Starting Friday morning, more than 300 volunteers worked around the clock to pack enough food to provide 111,137 Central Floridians with a meal.

According to Dan Samuels, senior director of philanthropy for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, the food will be distributed through the organization’s more than 800 community partners.

“As soon as Monday, they will be going out to our community through mobile distributions, through feeding partners,” Samuels said. “We have over 800 community partners that help us distribute this food so our neighbors are going to be able to go to a partner in their community someplace local and get the food assistance they need. All of that food coming from Second Harvest straight to those partners and straight to the community.”

The food bank says there are still ways to help this fall, such as by volunteering, starting a virtual food drive, or making a donation. According to Second Harvest, every dollar donated can provide about four meals.
