AUSTIN, Texas — After over a quarter century, east Austin’s Hoover’s Cooking is closing its doors.
The final day of full service at Hoover’s will be May 31, owner Hoover Alexander announcing that he will retire and close his longtime restaurant. The eatery will operate in a limited capacity through part of the summer with a smaller menu.
Alexander opened Hoover’s Cooking at 2002 Manor Rd. in 1998. Known for its comfort and soul food rooted in southern, Tex-Mex, Cajun and barbecue traditions, the restaurant has been a staple in Austin’s local food scene for over 27 years.
Alexander has worked in Austin restaurants for over 50 years, beginning his career in 1973 at age 19 at the Night Hawk restaurant, one of the first in the city to integrate its dining room and service staff.

Alexander later worked at other dining spaces in Austin, including Toulouse, Chez Fred and Good Eats Cafe, where he was a managing partner for six years.
“After much praying and pondering, I know the time for me to transition is now,” Alexander said. “I’m grateful for the love and support of the Greater Austin community for Hoover’s on Manor Road over 27 years. Transition doesn’t mean I’m over and done with. I will continue to be a part of serving and being a ‘place holder’ in our community. Please stay tuned!”
The Hoover’s Cooking team is also planning a final community Celebration Party on Monday, June 15, as a lead-in to Juneteenth week.
