Brandon senior running back Tyson Robinson is healthy this season and that’s bad news for the rest of the MSHAA Class 7A.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Michigan commitment – who had a nagging hamstring injury that slowed him down a lot last season – had another big game this season Friday night at previously undefeated Starkville.
Robinson gained 128 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns – two TDs in overtime – and caught three passes for 83 yards and one score to lead Brandon to a 38-31, double-overtime victory over Starkville in a non-region Class 7A game.
For his outstanding performance, Robinson has been named the Taste Restaurant/Mississippi Scoreboard Metro Jackson Football Player of the Week.
Robinson caught a 77-yard TD pass from senior quarterback and Illinois commitment Sladen Shack on the game’s first play from scrimmage, ran for a 5-yard TD in the second quarter, ran for a 3-yard TD in the first overtime and ran for a 10-yard TD in the second overtime.
He has 571 rushing yards and three TDs and caught 10 passes for 147 yards and one TD for this season for Brandon, which has a 4-1 record and is ranked No. 5 in MHSAA Class 7A and No. 5 in Mississippi to MaxPreps. Brandon’s only loss was the season opener to No. 1 Tupelo. He gained a career-high 201 yards on 24 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 33-23 victory over Madison Central earlier this season.
Robinson is rated the No. 10 player in Mississippi and the No. 20 running back in the country in the Class of 2027 by 247 Sports.
“Tyson showed what it truly means to refuse to be denied Friday night,” Brandon running backs coach Nate McLaurin said. “From pregame warmups to the final whistle, you could see the determination in his eyes. He set the tone for everyone from the start and never let up. Tyson brought that same intensity and effort throughout the entire game, and his teammates fed off of it. What makes Tyson special is not just his ability on the field, but the mindset he brings every time he steps out there. He has a way of elevating the people around him, and Friday night was another example of that.”
He had 1,050 rushing yards and caught 24 passes for 295 yards and scored nine total TDs despite missing four games and not playing at full speed in several more last season as a junior to help Brandon to a 7-6 record and reached the MHSAA Class 7A semifinals, losing to eventual champion Gulfport.
Robinson had 1,295 rushing yards and 24 TDs and caught 42 passes for 668 yards and 10 TDs two years ago as a sophomore and helped Brandon to a 12-2 record and a MHSAA Class 7A state runner-up finish. He was named to the Mississippi Scoreboard All-Metro Jackson team. He was one of four sophomores on the first team.
Robinson is the son of Tamara and Talbot Robinson. Tamara is from California. Talbot played tailback in football at Leflore High in the Mississippi Delta. Robinson’s brother, Timothy, played strong safety in football at Callaway High and Jackson State. Robinson’s other brother, TJ, played defensive back in football at Forest Hill High and Arkansas Baptist.
