IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A pilot project will give 40 veterans locally-sourced food boxes for seven weeks.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is putting $24,000 toward the Honor Harvest program.
Rural Iowa veterans living with diet-related chronic health conditions who receive care through the Iowa City VA Medical Center are eligible to receive the Honor Harvest boxes. Diet-related health conditions include hypertension, hyperlipidemia, Type 2 diabetes and obesity.
The food boxes will include local produce, meat and dairy products from Choose Iowa members. The boxes will be curated and distributed by Field to Family Food Hub.
The Honor Harvest boxes are part of a larger Food is Medicine pilot project, Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig said.
“Honor Harvest creates a meaningful new connection between Iowa veterans and Iowa farmers,” Naig said in a statement. “Good food is essential to wellness and healthy living, and this partnership will provide veterans with greater access to fresh, wholesome and nutritious food grown and raised right here in Iowa. At the same time, it creates new market opportunities for the family farms and food businesses that are Choose Iowa members. It’s Iowa farmers helping to serve Iowa veterans while supporting healthier lives and creating new market opportunities for Iowa agriculture.”
