SEIGLE FOUNDATION AWARDS $125K TO FOOD-RELATED NONPROFITS

The Seigle Foundation has awarded a collective $125,000 in grants to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, Food for Greater Elgin, Fox Valley Food for Health and the D300 Food Pantry.

“At a time of increasing demand for food among our most vulnerable neighbors, Seigle Foundation’s support enables Food for Greater Elgin to keep our shelves stocked and our doors open to those who need us most,” Andres Diez, CEO of Food for Greater Elgin, said in a news release.

In addition to assisting food-related organizations, the foundation focuses on funding housing, education, and arts nonprofits in the Elgin and Dundee area. For more information, go to SeigleFoundation.org.

Pumpkin Patch Festival

There will be about 500 locally grown pumpkins available for purchase and painting at this year's Pumpkin Patch Festival in South Elgin, which will be held Oct. 7 in SEBA Park.

SOUTH ELGIN’S ANNUAL PUMPKIN PATCH FEST ON SATURDAY

South Elgin’s 16th annual Pumpkin Patch Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in SEBA Park, 151 Water St.

A pet costume parade is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., according to the village website, and there also will be a hay pyramid, Halloween-themed inflatables, a craft show, face painting, pumpkin-themed yard games and, for local businesses and service organizations, a pumpkin-decorating contest.

Pumpkins of various sizes, haybales, cornstalks and concessions will be available for purchase.

FREE NAMI FAMILY-TO-FAMILY CLASSES IN OCTOBER, NOVEMBER

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Kane County North affiliate is offering a free, eight-session course for people who love someone with mental health conditions.

Participants will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday between Oct. 3 and Nov. 21 at New Life Community Church, 1580 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The classes will offer information about anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other conditions, according to a news release.

Topics covered will include communication, medication, treatment and recovery. The evidence-based program is designed to increase understanding and advocacy skills while helping caregivers maintain their own well-being, the release says.

MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE BEING STAGED AT THE HEMMENS

Michael Knight will star in “MJ The Illusion,” a tribute to Michael Jackson, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.

Knight studied Jackson’s moves with Travis Payne, who danced with Jackson and later choreographed Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson ONE,” a news release said. Knight received voice training from Seth Riggs, Jackson’s longtime vocal coach.

ECC STUDENT AMONG THE WINNERS OF DUPAGE SCHOLARSHIPS

DuPage County has awarded $35,000 in scholarships to area residents through its Community Services Block Grant Scholarship Program, including one to Hanover Park resident Monique Harrison, a nursing student at Elgin Community College.

Individual awards ranged from $5,000 to $10,000. The five recipients were chosen based on financial need, academic achievement, community and school involvement, and interest in high-demand employment sectors, the news release said.

The scholarships help cover the cost of tuition, books, supplies and other school expenses. They are funded in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for low-income individuals with high academic potential, the release said.

Other scholarship winners are Zakay Cuevas, of West Chicago, who is studying computer science at the Illinois Institute of Technology; Dakaria Robinson, a Naperville mom studying nursing at Rasmussen University; Flor Luna, a West Chicago mom studying accounting at College of DuPage; and Kayden Smith, a Downers Grove resident studying sociology at Illinois State University.
