Louisville is home to tons of restaurants serving takes on the Mexican food staple, and many of them proudly proclaim their taco adoration in their names, including Taco City, Taco Choza, Tacolandia and Tacos D’Amore.

In honor of National Taco Day, we rounded up some of the top taco spots, from hidden gems to vibrant modern kitchens, in Louisville. Read on for details on each taco restaurant and their specialities.

Adelita Mexican Restaurant

Adelita is known for serving authentic, homemade Mexican cuisine, and possibly the best mole in Louisville. The Frankfort Avenue spot’s menu includes a bunch of unique tacos, fitting to enjoy with a pink neon sign inside reading, “Feed me tacos and tell me I’m pretty.”

Along with a Tuesday special where you can get three tacos with homemade tortillas and your choice of meat, including asada, al pastor or chicken, for $12, you’ll find occasional options such as pork head tacos, slow-roasted cochinita pibil, fried fish or marinated shrimp in pesto.

And look out for a “new chapter” soon for Adelita. This Mexican restaurant, which currently sits at 2359 Frankfort Ave., will soon move to 1765 Mellwood Ave., the former location of Chik’n & Mi in Louisville’s Butchertown neighborhood.

Agave & Rye

Details: 426 Baxter Ave., Louisville, Kentucky, 502-873-5111; 324 E. Main St., New Albany, Indiana, 930-877-8226, agaveandrye.com

This chain serving “epic tacos” has 18 locations in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Indiana, including two in the Louisville area.

Agave & Rye, which includes a selection of tequila and bourbon, invites you to become a “taco tycoon” with double-shelled dishes such as the wagyu taco, topped with American wagyu, smoked chili-honey aioli, chili crisp, pickled pepper relish, crispy shallots, scallions and a soy-lime glaze, all on a crispy, warm flour tortilla.

Along with several chicken, beef and pork options, the menu includes vegetarian tacos such as “The Bang Bang,” made with crispy cauliflower, corn fritters, queso and crispy carrots. Under the luxe collection, tacos are topped with butter and garlic lobster or General Tso’s-glazed salmon. You can also grab a taco flight or elevate each taco with the “love cushion” option, adding queso, guacamole, pimento cheese or barbecue beans between your shell.

Chica’s Cantina

Details: 1015 E. Main St., Louisville, Kentucky, 502-322-4602, chicascantina.com

This simple, yet lively taco spot at 1015 E. Main St. opened in February from restaurateurs Vikrant Multani and Christian Nava, who are also behind Shahar at 1127 Logan St.

Inside the pink and blue building in Louisville’s Butchertown neighborhood, you’ll find a menu of seven types of tacos and several margarita, beer and craft cocktail options.

Inspired by a wave of taquerias in New Mexico making “very popular” ribeye tacos, Multani previously told The Courier Journal he included a ribeye taco on the Chica’s Cantina small menu because it’s a type of taco “that no one else has” in Louisville.

The thinly sliced meat is seasoned and grilled fast, according to the restaurant’s menu, printed with bright pink and blue fonts. And at $8, it’s the priciest taco on the menu by a few bucks. Others range from $3 to $6 and come with toppings such as grilled seasoned cactus, marinated pork shoulder and king oyster mushrooms.

El Molcajete

Details: 2932 S. 4th St., Louisville, Kentucky, 502-638-0300, elmolcajetelouisville.com

This cozy and unpretentious restaurant near Churchill Downs has previously been named among the best hidden gem spots by The Courier Journal. It’s also been a local favorite for tacos for over a decade.

With a wide-ranging menu that includes breakfast served all day, patrons swear by the restaurant’s namesake entree, Molcajete, a plate with skirt steak, chicken breast, bacon, Mexican sausage, cactus, cheese, grilled onions and jalapeños. Birria tacos also top the list of options – the slow-braised beef birria comes piled between three crispy corn tortillas with a side of rich birria consommé for dipping.

You’ll also find more than a dozen other taco options, priced between $3.50 and $4.50, including buche (pig stomach), lengua (beef tongue) and rajas (poblano pepper).

Guaca Mole Modern Mexican

If you’re looking for the most Instagram-able taco spot, Guaca Mole is up there. The vibrant restaurant in NuLu is covered with colorful murals and stunningly fun design elements, such as neon signs, a Frida Kahlo wall and a scene with carved hummingbirds and butterflies bursting from trees.

The authentic Mexican restaurant with a modern twist has, true to its name, three guacamole offerings and eight taco options, including baja fish tacos and grilled mahi mahi tacos, along with others filled with grilled ribeye, skewered marinated pork, chicken tinga and mezcal and agave glazed shrimp.

Noche Mexican BBQ

If you’re looking for a standout dining location for tacos, it’s hard to miss this church-turned-restaurant filled with stained glass windows and vaulted wood beam ceilings.

Under this unique and artsy venue, the tables are usually full with Noche Mexican BBQ’s signature dishes that meld, yes, Mexican cuisine with barbecue-style flavors and preparation, as evidenced in the popular barbecue pulled pork nachos. Noche’s taco section includes seven varieties, ranging from smoked brisket to vegan chorizo.

Taco Choza

This St. Matthews spot, named the 2026 winner of The Courier Journal’s Nachos Madness, is known for serving top-selling tacos inside a hut-like structure with a huge patio. Options at Taco Choza include popular birria or fish tacos or the Vaca Frita, topped with Cuban-style shredded beef, served in thin, crispy bits, and grilled peppers and onions. All but one, a taco topped with grilled salmon, are priced at less than $6.

In 2023, Veronica Castro took over Taco Choza from her friends and previous owners, Jose Cordoba and Nadia Calana, who opened the restaurant in 2019.

“Every single taco on every plate has been made with love,” Castro previously told The Courier Journal.

Taco City

Details: Multiple locations in Louisville, Kentucky, tacocitylouisville.com

Since opening its first location in the Highlandsat 1283 Bardstown Road in 2018, Taco City has become a fixture of Louisville.

Co-owners and brothers Oscar and Benigno Estrada launched the concept because they “wanted Louisville to have a place for real Mexican food made fresh every day,” according to Taco City’s website. Now, the wildly popular spot counts four locations around Louisville, including 3085 Breckenridge Lane, 11601 Shelbyville Road and 2860 Packerland Way.

The packed menu includes 23 taco options, with highlights like tacos filled with pork belly, Korean barbecue beef and street corn with grilled chicken. Along with vibrant murals, twinkly lights and neon signs proclaiming that Taco City serves “homemade tortillas,” each location offers a unique selection of drinks, such as a frozen margarita flight, the social media viral soft serve margaritas and a spicy cucumber margarita.

Tacos D’Amor

Details: 828 E. Main St., Louisville, Kentucky, 502-384-0982; 243 Blankenbaker Pkwy, Middletown, Kentucky, 502-365-4678, tacosdamorus.com

With several locations in Louisville, this rebrand of I Love Tacos is another miniature taco chain in Louisville worth checking out, particularly if you want to try a fish taco infused with Corona – yes, the beer.

Tacos D’Amore shares the taco love with Mexican street food vibes applied to 16 tacos on the menu, including a potato chorizo and egg combo to fulfill your breakfast taco fix. Other tacos are topped with grilled sirloin steak bites, slow-cooked marinated pork belly, pulled pork shoulder marinated and braised in achiote paste, and Corona beer-battered fish. Three vegetarian tacos top off the menu, including one with tofu and another packed with mushrooms, zucchini, onions, peppers, spinach, corn, tomatoes, black beans and plantain.

Tacolandia

Details: 5400 Preston Highway, Louisville, Kentucky, 502-702-3945 tacolandiaworld.com

With an impressive 14,000 followers on Instagram, Tacolandia is aiming to change the world, one taco at a time.

Tacolandia can be found on the corner of a Preston Highway shopping center, the type of hole-in-the-wall locale where the best tacos are often hiding. Tacolandia also hopes “to be more than a place to enjoy delicious tacos,” according to the restaurant’s website. “We aim to be a vibrant destination where food, culture, and community come together.”

Along with the popular Tacos De Quesabirria, the menu offers surprises on the taco front such as a taco tower, made with layers of tortillas, seasoned meat, melted cheese and sautéed vegetables stacked to form a hearty tower.

Tikka Tacos

Details: 331 Preston Highway, Louisville, Kentucky, 502-918-4606, tikkatacofusion.com

As far as fusion restaurants go, Tikka Tacos has found a niche with its Indo-Mexi mixture of fare.

On the menu, you’ll find more than 50 dishes such as dumplings, chicken and waffles, chicken tikka masala and shrimp rolls. Tikka Tacos opened in 2023 and promises “bold Indian spices” and “Mexican street soul,” according to its website. For some of the more unique tacos in Louisville, the restaurant offers Bollywood Tacos, which includes three soft Indo-Mexi fusion tacos piled with chicken, rice, lettuce, pico de gallo and avocado.

Veronica’s Mexican Restaurant

Details: Multiple locations in Louisville, Kentucky, veronicasmexrest.com

Birria tacos are perhaps the most talked about item at Veronica’s Mexican Restaurant, which has three locations in Louisville. But birria, a savory, slow-cooked meat stew originating from Jalisco, Mexico, shines on the menu in various forms, as birria is served with noodles, as the filling for egg rolls and as a topping for pizza. Birria balls are also on the menu under the long “birria” category, and they’re covered with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

Additionally, nine other taco choices are available at Veronica’s, including one filled with steak and chorizo.
