The Hungry Farmer Steakhouse has been on San Antonio’s Southside since the 1960s, with founding dates ranging from 1967 to 1969, depending on the source. The local staple has been a reliable stop for customers for decades, but its doors have closed following the deaths of its owners.
The affordable steakhouse was owned by the Garrahan family, with spouses Jack and Verlene running the business until 2026. Jack’s brother, Richard, who died in 2021, was also a founding member of the restaurant. Together, they established one of the Southside’s longest-running steakhouses, building a loyal customer base along the way.
Later in the restaurant’s life, additional locations opened around San Antonio and neighboring areas, but as of 2026, the sole Hungry Farmer was located along the southbound I-35 access road, where its rooftop horse sculpture and red tractors were visible from the highway. The business also had an adjoining concept called Uncle Barney’s that served burgers.
On March 26, 2026, Verlene died peacefully at 85, and her loving husband, Jack, followed her on September 28, 2026. He was 86. A TikTok video from the couple’s granddaughter, Madison Dunn, announced The Hungry Farmer’s closure earlier this week. MySA has reached out to Dunn for further confirmation of the restaurant’s status and will update this story when we hear back.
MySA also visited the restaurant on Friday, October 2, to look for signs that it was permanently closed. A sign at the entrance simply read, “Closed.” No one was visible on the property at the time, and when we tried calling, no one answered. We cannot definitively say the business is closed forever, but it is certainly the end of a lengthy chapter.
