One person is dead and at least one other was hurt after a driver crashed into the building of a restaurant in Whittier on Monday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
The crash was reported at about 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of East Slauson Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard at Michael’s Superburgers. There, the driver of a sedan crashed into the structure.
Surveillance footage from the scene showed several people in the area rushing outside after the crash. A woman who was injured in the incident could be heard screaming.
Brenda de Alba, who works nearby, said she and her coworker rushed across the street to help those who were injured. She said the woman who was heard wailing in the video injured her foot.
Grissley Roman, who was inside Michael’s Superburgers at the time of the crash, said the moments after were chaotic.
“The car went in flames,” Roman said. “There was smoke, even glass almost hit me.”
It’s unclear what caused the driver, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, to slam into the restaurant. It was the only vehicle involved in the incident.
Whittier police said the individual who was killed in the crash was a pedestrian. Details on the deceased, such as their gender and age, were not released.
The investigation is ongoing.
