WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Firefighters battled a 2-alarm building fire at Leeward Drive Inn, a landmark Korean restaurant in Waipahu early Friday morning.
Honolulu Fire Department crews were called out to the scene near Farrington Highway and Pupukahi Street just before 4:30 a.m. on Friday.
The first unit arrived at 4:35 a.m. and found smoke on all sides and flames through the roof.
Firefighters secured a water supply and initiated an aggressive offensive fire attack with an aerial ladder fire stream and handlines.
Overhaul techniques were performed on the rooftop and in the ceiling to extinguish smoldering materials while looking for hidden fires.
The fire was extinguished at 6:50 a.m., and the scene was cleared shortly after.
The restaurant will be closed Friday after the building sustained extensive interior damage.
No one was injured, and HFD said all searches confirmed no one was inside.
The HFD Fire Investigator was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire and provide damage estimates.
Honolulu police and Emergency Medical Services were also on the scene.
A GoFundMe has been started to help restore operations for the restaurant as soon as possible.
