A popular autumnal grocery item sold in Illinois grocery stores was recently recalled for potential lead contamination.

New York-based company Galil Importing Corp issued a voluntary recall Sept. 24 for Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning because it has the potential to be contaminated with elevated levels of lead.

The cinnamon product, with UPC 794711005484, was distributed to grocery and retail stores, supermarkets and delis in Illinois as well as in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and Florida between Nov. 18, 2025 and Sept. 7, 2026.

People who purchased the product are advised to avoid consuming it and to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

No illnesses related to the recalled product have been reported as of Sept. 24.

Lead exposure can affect anyone, but children are at the highest risk of harm because they are smaller and are still developing, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“While lead can affect nearly every bodily system, its effects depend upon the amount and duration of lead exposure and age/ body weight,” Galil Importing Corp’s recall announcement said.

IDPH officials report there is no safe level of lead in the blood, and lead exposure can lead to damage to the brain and nervous system, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In addition to the recent cinnamon recall, specific frozen pasta, tofu, eggs, frozen berries and alfalfa sprouts have also been subject to recalls in the U.S. recently, but overall recall numbers aren’t necessarily spiking in the nation compared to typical years, as reported by USA Today.
