MERIDEN – Police said Saturday they are investigating the case of human remains found Tuesday following a small brush fire as a homicide after it was determined the victim had several gunshot wounds.
On Tuesday morning, members of the Meriden Fire Department responded to the area of Hicks Avenue for a reported brush fire, the Meriden Police Department said in a release Saturday evening. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters initially discovered the remains of a person who had suffered burn injuries, police said.
Police responded to the scene and began an investigation into the circumstances of the person’s death.
Through the course of the investigation, detectives determined the victim – 35-year-old Travis Douglas – had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Deputy Police Chief Jeremiah Scully previously had provided details of the incident to reporters, but the investigation had not reached the level of a homicide at that time, police said.
“The Meriden Police Department extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Travis Douglas during this difficult time,” police said in Saturday’s release.
Scully said investigators were seeking to speak with residents who may have information about the death and obtain any surveillance footage from the area.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the lead investigator, Detective David Donofrio, at 203-630-6286 or ddonofrio@meridenct.gov.
