Is this nopal?

Hello! I found a cactus(?) in the mountains with prickly pears, and I got some pads as well. Just wanna be 100% it’s nopal before eating it! 😀

It is but the better parts are usually the fresh ones that are recently growing

Yes but it looks too old to eat, you want the mid size fresh sprouts, those will be less fibrous than the ones you have.

    Nopal translates literally to Cactus.

    YES.

Yes, but those look too mature. You need to get the tender ones, usually bright green and kind of thin.

Yes. But this is old nopal if you intend to eat it. You want the new “pads”

Yes; like they told you its probably a little old & probably too fibrous although yes its eddible you neednto get a knife cut the edges then take the crust with it; then it’ll be perfect for eating just cook it for more time

Put it in a pot with soil and let it grow. It takes a while for new growth but then you can harvest the new pads.

Not all nopal has good flavor, there’s different varieties, just buy from the supermarket like a normal person

Sí, pero ya está muy maduro para comerlo.

Younger pads are a lot more tender, but either way I’m sure it’ll be fine to eat. Just a lot more fibrous than normal

I fed my kids napol in Mexico . They went home and told their father . He took me to court and said I was feeding them drugs . Swear to God , I had to explain in court that it was a cactus that Mexican people ate at breakfast with their eggs .

Some friends ate a nopal they cut from a ranch, they all got food poisoned. Turns out you can’t eat any nopal, there’s a proper way to get it

They are, but if you plan on cooking some, you will need to cut the smaller young tender ones.

Every Sunday my dad would make my brother and I cut the younglings and scrape the spikes off. Fucking hated that job as a 10yo.

Today, I love a good carne asada and nopal taco or burrito.
