I can’t really answer your question but I once heard somewhere never try to smell if something is off by smelling near the rim of the jar. Whatever was in there ( milk/ketchup, etc whatever it is) dries on the rim where the cap goes and goes bad much sooner than the contents.

Just eat it even if it is mold. No big deal.

Looks like you had kahm yeast and mold was growing on the kahm but you poured it out so 🤷🏽♂️ pretty impossible to say if it’s safe or not now. If the peppers were not floating over the water line your probably fine and idave told you to scoop the moldy kahm layer out and enjoy your peppers.

If they are soft and squishy throw away, if hard, wash and keep in fridge, eat in a few weeks. Should be good.
